This medication is used to treat hemorrhoids and itching/swelling in the rectum/anus. It may also be used with other medications to treat certain intestinal problems (ulcerative colitis, cryptitis). Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory drug (corticosteroid hormone) that works by calming your body's natural defense response and by reducing swelling/inflammation. Using this medication as a suppository allows it to work directly on the affected area.
Use this product in the rectum only.
This product is generally used 2 or 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
Unwrap the suppository and moisten it with a few drops of water. Lie down on your left side with your right knee bent. Gently push one suppository into the rectum with your finger. Remain lying down for a few minutes, and avoid having a bowel movement for at least 1 hour so the drug will be absorbed.
Do not use more often or for a longer time than prescribed. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Side Effects
Burning, itching, skin/hair follicle irritation, dryness, and changes in skin color may occur when you first start to use this medicine. These effects should go away after a few days of use. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Some skin infections (bacterial or fungal) near the treated area can become worse when using this medication. Notify your doctor if redness, swelling, irritation, or small pimples form or do not improve.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: signs of a more serious infection (e.g., unusual rectal odor/discharge, new/worsening rectal pain or fever), rectal bleeding.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: body rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or to other corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone) or if you have any other allergies.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: rectal sores/infections, stomach/intestinal problems, diabetes.
Though very unlikely, it is possible this medication will be absorbed into your bloodstream. This may have undesirable consequences that may require you to take this drug by mouth. This is especially true for children and for those who have used this drug for an extended time. The risk is increased for those who also have serious medical problems such as serious infections, injuries, or surgeries. This precaution applies for up to one year after stopping use of this drug.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur: vision problems, persistent headache, increased thirst or urination, unusual weakness, weight loss, dizziness.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and inform them that you use (or have used) this medication.
If you have diabetes, this drug may make it harder to control your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar levels regularly as directed by your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst/urination, and tell him or her about your use of this medication. Your anti-diabetic medication or diet may need to be adjusted.
This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk when used as a suppository. Hydrocortisone passes into breast milk when taken by mouth. Breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
