USES: This medication is a hormone which after an initial increase will decrease symptoms of endometriosis such as pelvic pain, menstrual cramps and painful intercourse. This medication is also used in children to treat central precocious puberty.

HOW TO USE: This medication is a nasal spray. To use this spray, first clear nasal passages by gently blowing your nose. Insert the sprayer into the nose. Sniff as you squeeze the sprayer. Release your grip after you remove the sprayer from your nose. This will prevent mucous from entering the sprayer. Gently sniff two or three more times. If you must use a nasal decongestant while using this medication, wait at least 30 minutes after using this before using the decongestant. For the treatment of endometriosis, this medication is usually started between the second and fourth day of the menstrual period. The spray is usually used twice a day - one spray into one nostril in the morning, and one spray into the other nostril in the evening. Treatment should not last longer than six months. For the treatment of central precocious puberty, the usual dose is 8 sprays per day - two sprays into each nostril in the morning and evening.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause nasal irritation, headache, hot flashes (less common in children) and irritability. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Other effects include vaginal dryness, change in weight, change in sex drive, irregular or lack of menstruation, oily skin, excessive body hair. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience severe depression or have regular menstrual periods while taking this medication. Menstruation usually stops as a result of this medication. If doses are missed, you may experience some breakthrough bleeding. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of any allergies. Although menstrual periods may stop while taking this drug, it should not be considered a reliable form of birth control. Non-hormonal contraceptives such as a condom or diaphragm should be used. Nafarelin must not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is not known if this medication is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use. Do not stop or start any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222.
