PS efficacy on improving cognitive abilities has been demonstrated in numerous studies. People with age-associated memory impairment treated with BC-PS improved in performance tests relating to learning and memory tasks of daily activities compared to the placebo treated patients [21]. Treating geriatric patients with BC-PS resulted in significantly improved behavioral and cognitive parameters [22]. The results of a multi-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with AD patients, suggest that BC-PS improves cognitive performance, especially in patients with severe cognitive impairment [23]. Conversely, another study on AD patients [24] suggests the most apparent differences between the treatment groups is among patients with less severe cognitive impairment. The abovementioned clinical evidence is supported by numerous pre-clinical studies in which supplementation with BC-PS has been shown to attenuate neuronal effects of aging, as well as restoring normal memory in a variety of tasks. In these studies, BC-PS has been shown to affect multiple neurochemical systems (Figure 5), the neuronal membranes [25], cell metabolism [26] and neurotransmitter systems including acetylcholine [27], norepinephrine [28], serotonin and dopamine [29].

Vayacog? is a unique marine-derived compound in which DHA is anchored to PS. PS molecules are widely distributed among animals, plants and microorganisms. Approximately half of the PS found in the human body is located in the brain [31]. The fatty acid composition of endogenous PS depends on its localization and function in the cell. The brain and eyes are highly enriched with omega-3 fatty acids and a decrease in DHA is correlated with a drop in PS. As the major structural and functional component of the central nervous system, DHA constitutes as much as 20-50% of the total fatty acid content of the adult human brain [32,33] DHA is a orthomolecule whose functional sites are exclusively cell membranes, wherein it is structurally and functionally integrated via phospholipids molecules.
