The Alkalol Company was founded in 1896 by pharmacist James P. Whitters, who developed the original formula in a small laboratory above the A.J. Barker pharmacy in Taunton, Massachusetts. At the time, nose and throat specialists worried that existing products used to treat the nasal passages contained too much alcohol and glycerin, and that these ingredients damaged the delicate mucous membranes in the nose and sinus.

Mr. Whitters formulated ALKALOL -- a soothing alkaline saline solution infused with a unique mix of natural ingredients, including eucalyptol, thymol, menthol, camphor, and oils of wintergreen, spearmint, pine, and cinnamon -- as an alternative to these harsh products. ALKALOL was developed with only trace amounts of alcohol (2/100 of 1 percent), providing a more natural way to treat the irritating symptoms associated with sinusitis, allergies, colds, chronic nasal congestion, and other nasal and sinus maladies.

The Alkalol Company was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1907 and by the early 20th century ALKALOL was sold throughout the United States and abroad.

When Mr. Whitters died in 1937, his son, James Whitters Jr., took control of the company. Under his leadership for nearly 70 years, ALKALOL was manufactured with a steadfast commitment to quality and affordability. James Whitters Jr. passed away in 2005. His son, James Whitters III, recently took over as President of The Alkalol Company, and his grandchildren, James Whitters IV and Catharine (Whitters) Vaughn, are also involved in directing the company's operations.

Four generations of the Whitters family have been involved with the formulation and distribution of ALKALOL for over 100 years. From the beginning, The Alkalol Company has been committed to providing the finest and most effective nasal wash, mucus solvent, throat gargle, and oral rinse available at an affordable price. As we look to the future, that commitment will continue to be our guiding goal.

James P. Whitters, III
Chief Executive Officer of The Alkalol Company

What makes ALKALOL different from other nasal irrigation products, like saline rinses?
Unlike most other nasal irrigation products, ALKALOL contains no glycerine, iodine, antihistamine or other chemicals that irritate and damage tender mucous membranes in the nasal passages. Instead, since it was originally formulated in 1896, ALKALOL has been made with soothing natural ingredients, including eucalyptol, thymol, menthol, camphor, and oils of wintergreen, spearmint, pine and cinnamon. Physicians recommend ALKALOL because these ingredients provide soothing relief and won't dry or damage the mucosal membranes.

In addition, ALKALOL is the only commercially available solution which can be used safely as a nasal irrigant, oral rinse and throat gargle. ALKALOL is a cost-effective alternative to using multiple products for different purposes.

For what purposes can I use ALKALOL?
Sinus and Nasal Passage Complications:
ALKALOL provides soothing relief for individuals suffering from sinus infections (sinusitis), allergies, colds, chronic nasal congestion, post nasal drip, allergic rhinitis ("hay fever"), and other complications of the sinuses and nasal passages. Millions of Americans suffer from these maladies, which may be caused by pollution, dust, mold, pollen, animal dander, viruses, and bacteria that enter the nasal passages and sinuses. Irrigating the nasal passages and sinuses with ALKALOL has been recommended by physicians as a method of improving nasal breathing, promoting better sinus and nasal health, and reducing the incidence of infection.

ALKALOL is a natural solution that helps to wash the nasal passages of mucus, shrink inflamed, delicate nasal membranes and promote better breathing. ALKALOL also enhances mucociliary flow, the human body's natural purifying and filtration system.

Throat Treatment:
ALKALOL used as a gargle or spray full strength is a valuable treatment for sore throat, dry throat, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and laryngitis.

Mouth Sores:
Mucositis and stomatitis, or redness and swelling in the mouth and throat, can be caused by chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment. Sometimes these conditions also lead to mouth sores or ulcers. As a "mucolytic agent", ALKALOL will help soften and dislodge dried secretions on the mucosal surface, most especially the palate. Rinsing with ALKALOL makes the mouth more alkaline and reduces the growth of bacteria and dried secretions that have attached to the mouth, thereby bringing soothing and comfort to the user.

Other Uses:
Physicians have recommended ALKALOL for patients with chronic middle ear infections. For these patients, applying warm ALKALOL with a soft rubber ear syringe has been effective in helping to clear up pus discharges and softening wax secretions, and as a satisfactory deodorant.

ALKALOL has also been effective in treating common insect bites, sunburn and minor burns.

What are the benefits of nasal irrigation for patients with nasal and sinus complications?
Clinical studies have proven that for nasal and sinus complications, nasal irrigation provides patients relief and often decreases the need for prescription medications. In addition, when combined with other medical treatments, nasal irrigation by patients suffering from chronic sinusitis may reduce the need for surgical intervention.

How do I use ALKALOL?
For nasal irrigation, the ALKALOL NASAL CUP is a simple and safe method to deliver ALKALOL into the nasal passages. The ALKALOL NASAL CUP is specially designed with a vertical nozzle to operate most effectively with the head tilted slightly forward and sideways. Please see directions on the ALKLALOL NASAL CUP package for details.

Alkalol may also be used with the Grossan Hydro Pulse Nasal / Sinus System. Dr. Murray Grossan, a leading ear, nose, and throat specialist, recommends adding Alkalol to the saline solution of the Hydro Pulse for better mucus effect.

To treat throat complications or mouth sores, ALKALOL can be used as a throat gargle or oral rinse.

ALKALOL may also be applied directly to the skin using clean cotton or gauze to treat minor skin irritations.

What are the benefits of using the ALKLALOL NASAL CUP?
The ALKLALOL NASAL CUP may be a more sterile option than products delivered by spray, bottle or bulb syringe. In fact, a recent clinical study demonstrated that nasal cups ("nasal pots") grew only half the bacteria of that in bulb syringes used for nasal irrigation.

In addition, correct use of the ALKLALOL NASAL CUP distributes the solution more effectively than certain other delivery methods. Because of this, ALKALOL can reach, cleanse and soothe more irritated regions of the sinuses. At the same time, the nasal cup helps to eliminate involving the middle ear in the irrigation procedure, thus reducing the risk of ear complications.
