How Does DocuSol? and DocuSol? Plus Work?
DocuSol? and DocuSol? Plus were formulated for the relief of constipation due to infrequent or difficult bowel movements. DocuSol? and DocuSol? Plus penetrates and softens the stool, thereby promoting bowel movement. The DocuSol? and DocuSol? Plus formulation functions as a hyper-osmotic laxative by drawing water into the bowel from surrounding body tissues. The docusate sodium acts as a softener by preparing the stool to readily mix with watery fluids. The increased mass of stool promotes a bowel evacuation by stimulating nerve endings in the bowel lining and initiating peristalsis. Not only does it soften and loosen the stool but it initiates a normal stimulus replicating a normal bowel movement. DocuSol? and DocuSol? Plus helps establish a faster and more predictable bowel movement with reducing bowel accidents and incontinence. DocuSol? Plus also contains Benzocaine to anesthetize the rectum and lower bowel and is beneficial when an anesthetic is needed to prevent hyperreflexia crisis or painful bowel movement.
How do you use DocuSol? and DocuSol?Plus?
Directions:
Adults and children 12 years of age and older (with adult supervision), one to three units daily. Children under 12 years of age, consult a physician prior to use.
Positioning:
For best results, lay on left side with knees bent.
Alternate position:
Administer while seated on the toilet.
Kneel, then lower head and chest forward until side of face is resting on the surface with arm folded comfortably.
Administration:
DocuSol? is to be used as an enema. This is not a suppository. Do not take orally.
Administering the mini-enema:
Clear stool from the rectal opening, as you do not want to insert directly into feces.
Twist off and remove tip.
Place a few drops of the tubes liquid content on the shaft pior to insertion.
Also apply liquid content or lubricant to the anus before inserting the mini-enema tube.
With steady pressure, gently insert the tube into the rectum with care to prevent damage to the rectal wall.
Squeeze to empty the contents.
Keep the tube squeezed until it is removed from the rectum.
After the contents have been emptied, remove the disposable tube and discard. A small amount of liquid may remain in the unit after use.
Most patients will have a stimulus within 2-5 minutes.
Wait up to 15 minutes for evacuation.
After evacuation, perform digital stimulation to ensure the program is complete.
If no evacuation occurs after the 15 minute period, perform digital stimulation to assist in bringing the stool down. If there are still no results, repeat steps 2-11.
